Why film wedding photography makes sense
This Winona Lake film wedding reception in Warsaw, Indiana was photographed on 35mm film and centered around connection and nostalgia – the best type of day.
The Grave’s were wed in Joshua Tree, California a few months back, with a stunning outdoor elopement styled ceremony. After many big life moments, they finally had a casual outdoor wedding reception in Kelsey’s college town that summer. Warsaw + Winona Lake, Indiana is a quant small town. Winona Lake is full of gorgeous lake-life weddings and celebrations.
The Grave’s desired their reception to feel fun and casual. Therefore, their friend’s barn in Warsaw made for the perfect scenery to host. They strung Edison bulb lights, family style tables, and an open buffet style charcuterie table with homemade pies for dessert. Sam also made his famous chocolate coffee cold brew, and packaged it up in little take home bottles for guests.
In fact, my favorite reception decor was the eclectic mix of china plates, bud vases, and pink paper handheld fans. But beyond the looks, the evening was lighthearted and full of laughter and hugs of celebration. By the time the music started, the space felt even more alive. This was the kind of celebration where no one stayed seated for long after dinner.
Most importantly, film photography really mattered here. Film forces the photographer to slow down, and notice the small moments and gestures differently. It takes me back to the basics of composition and detail. The Grave’s heavily emphasized how much they love 35mm film and the nostalgic and grainy qualities it holds, and capturing their family and friends in this way was their biggest goal. In short, reflecting on this day fills me with gratitude. Kelsey was my wedding photographer in 2022, and this has been such a full circle moment of friendship and trust to capture their own wedding reception.
